26 TOP SEO TIPS 

Search Engine Optimisation is such an important aspect of gaining organic traffic to any website and according to Advanced Web Ranking, 2015, the first position on Google search results on desktop has a 34.36% click-through rate. With all Google users relying on search engines to help them solve their problems it’s important to add a search engine optimisation strategy to your online marketing mix.

 

To help, I have compiled this list of my top 26 SEO tips you can implement yourself.

 

 

1. Your website needs to be mobile friendly.

It doesn’t matter how you have built your site or whether it is built on WordPress or WIX, it needs to be mobile responsive.  

 

 

2. All of your text needs to be keyword targeted.

Keywords are the apple of search engine optimisations eyes! Keywords are crucial for getting your articles and content seen.

 

For example, if you are writing about dog characteristics for example and you want your articles to include keywords, focusing your article to include more targeted keywords like “French Bulldog characteristics” instead will help your search engine optimisation as the competition for the keyword “dog characteristics” against “French Bulldog characteristics” is much more competitive. 

 

Adding your keywords to the following areas of your text or copy is also very important for optimisation, you can see some examples of places where you should be adding keywords below: 

 

  • URL 
  • The title of your post 
  • Headlines 
  • Your text paragraphs 
  • Your posts images (remember to write the name of your image as the name of your post title with keyword!) 

 

3. All of your images need to be keyword targeted.

Make sure all of your images include your specific keywords in the description and that the keyword is also placed in the descriptions and title of your image settings in your website. If you have an image in a blog post about SEO Tips, name the photo “seo-tips.JPG” instead of the name/number your computer will automatically save the file as.  

 

 

4. Increase your website load speed.

This is HUGE. Google does not like slow sites… You can test your speed times HERE - (they will test your mobile and desktop sites and advise you of improvements to make.) 

 

 

5. Use Google’s Keyword Planner.

Google’s Keyword Planner is a phenomenal tool for generating your contents keywords and seeing how competitive on the web they are. Researching your keywords, allows you to know what keywords people are using to find your content and how competitive that keyword is. You can find the Keyword Planner HERE!

 

 

6. Set up Google Analytics on your website.

Setting up Google Analytics is one of the first tasks you should be doing on your website as well as monitoring and analysing your website's results. Google Analytics will identify your website's traffic, what devices your traffic is using, the country they are visiting from and the list goes on… There is SO MUCH value in terms of insights, of your visitors from Google Analytics.  

 

 

7. Set up Google Search Console.

Google Console is a great tool to help you monitor and maintain your site's presence on Google! Setting up Google Search Console will help you understand how Google looks at your website and advises you what you can do to improve your websites search performance and ability.  

 

 

8. Set up a Google My Business page.

Setting up a Google My Business Page is very beneficial for managing how your business information appears in Google and helps your customers find and contact you quicker! Google My Business also allows you to promote your brand and story, interact with customers through reviews and helps you find insights into how customers are searching for your business.   

 

 

9. Don’t use images with text in place of text.

Google loves great text and unfortunately cannot read your images so for the best results always write your text and leave your images for representing your brand.  

 

 

10. Don’t write your keyword too much, Google will flag it as spam.

Stay away from constantly dropping your keyword. Google will flag your site and penalise it if they find you are doing this.  

 

For example, Potato is your keyword: “I love potatoes, potatoes give me so much joy that I constantly feel like a potato and it makes me want to eat more potatoes”. It’s too much potato haha - I don’t know why I chose potato but you get the picture.   

 

 

11. Create a blog.

One of the best methods of gaining much better search engine optimisation is by creating a blog. It helps you become an authority on your topic and Google loves lengthy blog topics related to your business!  

 

 

12. Write lengthy articles on your key topics.

As a rule of thumb, I never write less then 500 words for a blog post and I aim for 2,000+ words. Yes, it can be difficult, but with the amount of content currently on the internet these days, it is the longer more in-depth articles and posts that gain Google’s attention.  

 

 

13. Write lengthy product descriptions.

Not only do lengthy more in-depth product descriptions help convert sales they also help your SEO capabilities. So, take your time writing killer product descriptions and give as much detail about your product and brand as possible.  

 

Also as a tip, detailed and structured product descriptions help your site and sales if other e-commerce sites are selling your products – you want to stand out and convert those leads to sales!  

 

 

14. Add headings and subheadings to your blog content. 

Google likes to favour websites with articles with headings and subheadings and italics and bold text so get creative and segment your information. It is also more user-friendly for your readers to read your information.  

 

 

15. Link your pages to other websites.

Link your website with important sites that relate to what you are talking about. The more you link, the more favourable Google can look at your website and content. Just like my posts, for example, you can see I link up with several other websites, I recommend or talk about in my articles to help viewers understand more about my content and also help my SEO. Double win! 

 

 

16. Link your pages to other pages within your website.

After writing a blog post or an about page, for example, add other links to your writing to entice people to continue to click through and read more and more of your content.

17. Use the YOAST SEO plugin.

WordPress’s search engine optimisation plugin, YOAST, is one of the most downloaded plugins of all times and there is certainly a reason for it! YOAST will make sure you are writing content to the best of your SEO capabilities with analysis of your work under each article! It will help you write more intuitively to your websites SEO needs and help you stand out in Googles search engine rankings! 

 

 

18. Set up all of your social media pages.

Social media pages have a great impact on search engine optimisation. It helps build that trust with your customers and also helps establish your brand and business in the online community too! Double win! 

 

 

19. Use simple and clean URL’S.

Having clean URL’s is super important and something that needs to be a priority. 

 

A clean URL example looks like this:

https://www.goingcoconuts.com.au/blog

and a bad URL example looks like this:

https://www.goingcoconuts.com.au/786532/index/php/blog 

 

 

20. Create EVERGREEN content.

Creating constant evergreen content is crucial to keep your sites SEO functioning. Evergreen content is content that will last on your site for years and is not typically like a news article that has an expiry of time on it. For example, this post is evergreen content because people can look at this post say in 2019 and still benefit from its purpose.  

 

 

21. Analyse some of your page one competitor’s websites on google.

A great way of helping your SEO is to look at who out of your competitors are ranking above you and look at their chosen keywords.

For example, in the coconut oil industry, “Buy Coconut Oil” is a pretty specific keyword as someone in Google would write this when looking to “Buy Coconut Oil”. By adopting these keywords into your headings and page text it will help you crawl up the Google rankings ladder.  

As an exercise, have a look at what your top five competitors are writing for their keywords and try and adapt them to your content.  

 

 

22. Curate your sites search data and use keywords.

Research and curate your websites search data and utilise the information to compile a list of keywords to add to your keywords list.  

 

Tip, if you don’t have a search function on your website, I would highly recommend getting one as it shows you what your audience is searching for on your site! 

 

 

23. Invite your clients to leave Google reviews.

Google search engine loves Google reviews, so entice and encourage your customers to leave reviews. Another great way to encourage a lot of reviews is to offer a competition where they can win a prize or voucher for leaving a review if they like your product or service. 24. Access who is linking your page.

Using Google Webmaster Tools you can view who is linking to your pages and find out which articles, posts and pages are really working well for you.  

 

 

25. Fix all of your broken links. 

Something really important to keep on top of is fixing and checking is your website broken links. Here is a website that does it for free! 

 

 

26. Conduct site audits regularly.

This is very important. Regularly conducting site audits helps you keep on top of your SEO game.
